Side Effects Of Exforge Medicine
Exforge is a drug used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It contains fixed amounts of the calcium-channel blocker amlodipine and the angiotensin II antagonist known as valsartan. While this drug is usually effective at treating hypertension, there are possible side effects that could make a dosage adjustment or change to another antihypertensive drug necessary.
Cardiovascular System
Because valsartan and amlodipine can affect the heart rate, there are some cardiovascular system side effects of Exforge. Heart palpitations and a fast heart rate (tachycardia) can occur. This drug can also cause flushing, which is due to the rapid flow of blood through the blood vessels.
Gastrointestinal System
Gastrointestinal system side effects of Exforge include nausea, indigestion, constipation, abdominal pain, vomiting, dry mouth, colitis and abdominal distention. Some side effects can be reduced by taking Exforge with food.
General Side Effects
Some side effects do not affect any particular body system, so they are considered general side effects. The general side effects of this drug include fatigue, swelling, pitting edema, weakness and fever.
Musculoskeletal System
This drug can affect the bones, muscles and joints. Musculoskeletal side effects include joint pain, muscle spasms, muscle pain, joint swelling, back pain, pain in the extremities and chest wall pain.
Nervous System
Exforge has been associated with nervous system side effects, such as headache, sinus headache, drowsiness, numbness, tingling, reduced sensation, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Psychiatric Effects
Like many other prescription medications, Exforge can cause psychiatric effects that alter a person’s mood or mental status. Exforge has been known to cause anxiety, depression and insomnia. If these side effects are persistent, they should be reported so that a dosage adjustment can be considered.
Renal and Urinary Systems
Exforge has been linked to the formation of kidney stones as well as frequent daytime urination and blood in the urine.
Reproductive System
Erectile dysfunction has been associated with Exforge and is a side effect of several other blood pressure medications. This condition occurs because antihypertensive drugs reduce the force with which blood is pumped by the heart. This can slow blood flow and interfere with a man’s ability to get and maintain an erection.
Respiratory System
Respiratory system side effects of Exforge include difficulty breathing, sinus congestion, nosebleed, nasal congestion, pain in the pharynx, productive cough and voice disorders.
Skin Effects
Exforge can cause rash, itching, excessive sweating, eczema and redness of the skin. If an allergic reaction occurs, hives can also appear on the skin. Seek immediate medical attention in the event of an allergic reaction.
