Teczem, New Blood Pressure Medication Cleared by FDA
Teczem, New Blood Pressure Medication Cleared by FDA KANSAS CITY, Mo., Oct. 11, 1996 — Hoechst Marion Roussel today announced that Teczem(TM) (enalapril maleate/diltiazem malate), a new therapy for high blood pressure, has been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for marketing in the United States.
Teczem combines two of the most widely prescribed active compounds for the treatment of high blood pressure in a single tablet. Vasotec(R) is the brand name for enalapril — one of the leading angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Vasotec is manufactured by Merck & Co., Inc.
Diltiazem malate has the same active compound as diltiazem HCl, sold under the brand name Cardizem(R) CD and marketed by Hoechst Marion Roussel for angina and for hypertension.
Teczem is not indicated for the initial treatment of high blood pressure. However, frequently a single-drug therapy fails to control blood pressure and a doctor may prescribe an additional antihypertensive. In many of these patients, Vasotec or diltiazem are already prescribed. Teczem combines these two medications in one tablet. The product, which will not be available until the first quarter of 1997, will be manufactured by Merck and marketed by Hoechst Marion Roussel.
“Hoechst Marion Roussel is proud to introduce this new addition to its already broad line of cardiovascular products including calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors and diuretics,” said Peter Ladell, president, Hoechst Marion Roussel North America. “Teczem will offer convenience and economy for patients whose blood pressure is not controlled with diltiazem or enalapril monotherapy.”
Teczem is the first combination product of an ACE inhibitor and a non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker. Non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers are distinguished by their heart-rate lowering action in the treatment of hypertension.
A world leader in pharmaceutical-based health care, Hoechst Marion Roussel is dedicated to extending and enhancing human life through the discovery, development, manufacture and sale of pharmaceutical products. Hoechst Marion Roussel, with global headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany, and North American headquarters in Kansas City, Mo., is a member of the Hoechst Group.
